Estate planning really encompasses almost every aspect of your life.  We like to look at your estate planning in five different components:

Documents:

What types of documents do you have?  Do the documents do exactly what you need them to do? 

Do you have a Durable Power of Attorney that clearly spells out your end-of-life issues?

Do you have a Revocable Living Trust to manage your affairs after you are gone?  The American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys list the Revocable Living Trust as their number one estate planning strategy.

There are many other documents you can have that will have a direct impact on your life - like succession documents, Wills, life insurance trusts, business entities, and many, many others.  Do you have the documents you need?  Do the documents you have accomplish what you need them to do? 

Income and Taxation: 

This seems simple enough.  Maximize Income.  Minimize Taxation.  Many people don't realize it, but a few small changes can have a major positive impact on your bottom line!

Assets:

There are lots of questions here.  How are the assets held?  Is there a federal estate tax problem?  Who is going to take over the family business?  Are your assets at risk from bad markets or a bad business deal?  What can you do better to make sure your assets are not gobbled up by taxes, legal fees and other costs associated with settling and managing your estate?

Insurance:

This is one area where we need to protect our asset base without becoming "insurance poor."  Don't give half your life insurance proceeds away because you owned your policy improperly!  Don't let a long term care need devastate your finances.  Don't let an uninsured risk wipe you out.

People:

This is the most important part of any plan.  We need to put people in the center of the plan as its highest value! 

If you own a business or are responsible for running a business, you MUST do quality business planning!
